Dawn's Minute to Minute Newsletter Response to Maria

Teaching Children to Trust an Invisible God

Q: My question has to do with how to homeschool in the midst of financial stress. How do I continue to provide a safe and nurturing environment in the midst of financial stress caused by decreasing income and the looming threat of having to move? My child knows that she has a heavenly Father and Savior who provides for us but doesn't understand why He would withhold work from her father.
Choosing to stay the course for the future hope that is laid before us, Maria.

A: Dear Maria,One of the first responses I would have to a child concerned about the financial setbacks of her dad's work is prayer. Stressing the place of God as provider should be priority. Another response is to help her understand how money works and show her how she can help save money on utilities by shutting off lights, not running water when it's not necessary, and other small ways she can save money. Giving her tangible ways to help daddy during this tough financial time can give her a special feeling of showing her love and support. Showing her ways she can save money with homeschooling can help give her a clear picture of how best you use your financial resources for her education. Library usage and buying necessary items on sale are good places to start. It can be a scary time for any child whose parent has either lost a job or has had a severe cutback on his income. Emphasizing God's provision, even if it's not exactly the way your child hopes it would be, and showing her ways she can help save money and learn some important math concepts in the process can help toward giving her a nurturing and stable environment, even if the money is tight. Sometimes there are inevitable steps that need to be taken in order to work out the circumstances to the best of your ability in order to keep financially afloat. May God bless you with His complete provision for you and your family.Trusting a providing God,
Dawn
