Dawn's Minute to Minute Newsletter Response to Kris

Q: I am in my second year of homeschooling six children, ages 7, two 9s (not twins), 11,14, and 17. We adopted all three sets of two biological siblings about nine years ago. They were various ages by the time we got them, so they are all behind in one way or another--emotionally and educationally. They were also in the public school system, where they got more behind and were not taught certain subjects well or at all--particularly writing and grammar. This makes for overwhelming challenges in homeschooling.

They all have difficulty in the area of communication--oral and written. And this is the area I need encouragement and advice in right now. The younger four especially have a hard time writing. One reason is that they can't spell very well. We are addressing that through Spell to Write and Read. But I also need some ideas on how to encourage them and keep positive attitudes toward writing. I believe we're on a threshold, teetering between turning them off from writing and being excited or at least positive about it. How have any of you been successful with teaching writing, especially to kids who don't want to write or have difficulty writing?
Homeschooling six children,
Kris

A: We had a time of Bible study each day before we started our daily lessons. When my daughters were old enough to read and express their understanding of what they were reading (by early adolescence), I expected them to write a Scripture they especially liked which would help in emphasizing proper spelling, and they would share what they learned personally from their reading. We would all read the same passage and share our insights the next day. They also wrote down prayer requests to share.
