» Words To Sing (and Write) By

Music can be a daily inspiration, especially in our writing, whether it’s using music to help create a certain mood when writing a scene in a novel or playing music to help us stay focused when writing.

Music or a lyric from a song can be a catalyst toward the creation of poetry, add cultural or meaningful relevance in a novel scene, or invoke a memoir piece.

Journaling Prompt:
Take a lyric, either from your favorite song or one you happen to have replaying in your mind at the moment.
Ask yourself: Does this lyric carry a positive or negative connotation for me? Why? Journal your answer.

Does this lyric prompt a positive or negative memory? If so, journal this memory in detail.

In helping to give yourself perspective with this memory, how do you feel about this lyric now compared to when you had this memory? How are you different? How are you the same? How have things changed for you in a positive way from the time of this memory?

Journal writing tip: When writing your memory in conjunction with the song lyric, express yourself fully, including as much detail as possible. Use all of your senses: reveal scents/odors, recall the touch of something relevant, discover the sounds anew, describe colors and rich detail of the setting, taste and describe what is good.
Date your entry and record your age and occupation and name any significant relationships in your current life. These details will prove to be useful for future reference in giving you a clearer picture of your personal development.

For further writing:
Use this lyric or the memory it invokes as the start of a poem, short story, essay, a memoir piece, or use it to add texture or relevance to the scene in a novel you’re writing.
